Kathie J. Lyman Medical Student Scholarship Fund
The Polk County Medical Society organized October 24, 1851, is the oldest continuously operating medical society in the state of Iowa. Currently PCMS has 1,224 physician members and is the largest county medical society in the state. Society members represent every specialty of medicine.
The Polk County Medical Society board in recognition of our Special Project Director, Kathie J. Lyman’s 20 years of service to the doctors of Central Iowa, along with recognizing a career of commitment to physicians and the medical community, has established a perpetual scholarship fund in her name.
Kathie started her career working with doctors in Medical Staff and Medical Education at Mercy Hospital Medical Center assisting to establish the first medical student rotations with the medical students from Des Moines University, (formerly University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences) in the early 70’s. Throughout her career she has continued to be very committed to furthering medical education. This scholarship was created to provide support to medical students’ annually. The scholarship recognizes both scholarly achievements and financial needs. The perpetual scholarship will be a tribute to her lifelong work furthering medical education.
The Scholarship Committee awards scholarships to medical students each year. Two scholarships will be awarded annually of $1,000 each from funds either donated or through fund raising through the KJL Scholarship/Polk County Medical Society Foundation. The Committee is currently accepting applications.
The criteria for scholarship awards will be based on scholastic achievement and/or financial need. The applicant must be a legal resident of Iowa at the time of applying to medical school and currently attending an accredited medical or osteopathic school in Iowa. Applicant must submit in writing to firstname.lastname@example.org or 1520 High Street, Des Moines, IA 50309 a current transcript, two letters of recommendation, and a one to two page essay stating the applicant’s reasons for selecting a career in medicine and why they feel deserving of the award.
Application deadline is February 29. Only completed applications will be considered. Applications received after the deadline will not be accepted.
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th year students enrolled, (with a tuition obligation) in an accredited medical or osteopathic school and a legal resident Iowa at the time of applying to medical school.
Students in high academic standing and have a financial need.

Length of Funding:
One year. The grant will be used for the purposes identified in the award letter. The medical student at the end of the grant year will be required to submit a letter of completion of that years education, or return any portion of the grant not used for medical education training in one of the two approved schools.
